I was just curious as to what team everyone here wants to coach in NFL HC. Also what defense you would like to run. Maybe not necessarily at first because you may not have the personnel to, but maybe down the line. Ditto for offense.
Then who do you want to look at in the draft?
My fav team- Lions
Team I want to coach- Lions (but I am definitly considering taking a job somewhere else, just depends on what other 4 teams I get offered.
Defense- If I take the Lions, the first year I will run a 4-3 mixed with a 3-4. I will throw in very little cover 2 because the Lions DB's as you get deeper through the depth chart become more man to man style. Also with the re-signing of Kalimba Edwards he can be used in situational spots to go from DE to OLB. I would like to eventually go to the 4-3 later. I believe 4-3 creates the best pressure. I always blitz with a LB so I have understood how to utilize that after so long.
Offense- I am considering keeping Harrington on the roster. But am not sure. If I keep him then I will definitly go to the vertical offense. SCREW THE WCO. Now if I get a guy like Kitna I may go to more of a ball possesion O. I like KJ, Bryson, Calhoun in the backfield to be able to have dump off routes as well as a great running game. Eventually my goal is to just get a pure vertical offense. But I MUST have a solid RB in the backfield.
Draft- Since I have the ninth pick(assuming I am the Leos) I will look at trading back a little bit farther. Vince Young seems to be falling in every mock I have seen for this game. Around 20's. So that may be where I go to. Just to pick up an extra pick in the 2nd or 3rd. I also will look at Ernie Sims, Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart, Chad Greenway, D'Brick, Jimmy Williams. IT appears some of these guys are falling in the draft as well. D'Brick would be a huge gain for me on the Lions O-Line.
How about you guys?

I will go with the rams.
defense- first couple years I will be forced to run a cover 2, because of the personnel, but as soon as I can I will run a modified 4-3, with at least one OLB blitzing on every play and the MLB on a QB spy with all the corners on man-to-man and safeties in zone coverage.
offense- I will pound the ball inside and outside, then throw in some play-action for a TD.
draft- I will trade down the 11th pick to the 20th and try to pick up a 3rd rounder. With the 20th pick, I will take Vince Young. I will try to trade my 4th, 5th, and 6th rounders for an extra 3rd rounder. Then I will go after Leonard Pope/Marcedes Lewis in the 2nd, and then go defense for the 3rd round+

I'm dem Redskins.
defense - I'll run a 4-3 with a blitzing D that sends everyone, safeties, corners and linebackers. Usually I'll have Sean Taylor roaming the field in deep coverage looking to deliver a big hit or get a pick and I will send and have Adam Archuleta blitz. Along with sending Marcus Washington in sometimes.
offense - I will have a running game that sets up the passing game and pound Clinton Portis until I can find Santana Moss, Brandon Lloydd, and Antwaan Randle El. Around the goal-line I will throw play-action passes to Chris Cooley and Mike Sellers.
draft - Depending on if we have the 22nd pick in the game I will do this. If I do have it, I will try to take Ernie Simms or Manny Lawson. If I don't I will probably stay out of the first round and spend all of my picks but 1 on defense. The one I don't spend on D will be to select an offensive lineman to add some depth.

I'll also be the Lions
Definitely focus on defense. We have a great core to work with on O, with great talent at WR (obviously) and a solid, underrated o-line. Keep Joey and try getting a veteran in Free Agency to challenge Orlovsky as the backup. Immediately shoot anyone who tells you to trade up in the draft to get a QB. The D-Line is one of the best in the game. Wilkinson is getting old, but Rogers will dominate. The DEs will pressure the QB just fine, with Hall and Edwards speed rushing (Cody is more of an inside guy, but can be used outside on rushing situations). With Teddy Lehman and Boss Bailey, we have two of the fastest LBs in the game, and Holmes can plug the middle just fine. We're solid at starting CB and SS. Special teams are among the top 3-4 in the league, as evidenced by the ST coach staying in that position for going on 9 seasons.
Draft/FA Needs: - one more speedy LB, Lehman can move inside if needed - FS needs an upgrade, Holt has been slow to develop - secondary as a whole, particularly CB, lacks depth, address in the late rounds or FA - We need a LG and RT for the O-line - RB position could use some depth, 2 good HBs (don't overlook Bryson)and a great FB (Schlesinger is getting old though)

Keep in mind that KJ is not an every down back. Bryson may actually be the best all around back the Lions have right now. But as a pure RB Jones is far beyond what Bryson is.
Yes, there is 0 and I repeat, 0 need to trade UP but trading down is always a consideration. I do believe that Joe, if I keep him will only be for a year because of that huge contract he has. Which is why I truely consider trading down for Vince Young with another pick. VY seems to be a player that will take a year or 2 to develop.
Even at TE you may want to look at. Maybe Mercedes Lewis. Pollard is getting older remember. But if you run a vertical offense then the TE will be needed. If you stick to the WCO then it will not be as much as a neccessity.
Remember also that you will have to re-sign or Franchise tag Jeff Backus if you want to keep him around. I will re-sign Backus long term and re-sign Kyle Kosier to a short term contract to keep him around maybe. Another player I am highly considering jumping after is Kyle Turley. He would be a great FA pick up for the O-line.
Defensively the Lions still need a more consistent DE that can be a pass rush threat constantly. Hall, Edwards, Redding, just aren't proven to do that yet. As I said before I will go 3-4 every now and then to mix it up because you can line up the Defense in either way fairly well.
4-3 LE- Edwards DT- Wilkinson, Rogers, Cody, Bell,(easy rotation. All will work) RE- Hall
3-4 DL- Cody, Rogers/Wilkinson/Bell, Hall LB- Edwards, Lehman, Holmes, Bailey
Now keep in mind if you choose not to resign either Edwards or Holmes then this idea is shot. But if you re-sign Edwards you can let go of Holmes as long as you get somebody like a Sims via draft or FA.
At the DB's specifically CB depth is not there. Bly is a great CB. Now Bly can play man or zone. He excels more in zone. While Bryant excels much much more in man. So although Bryant is good you will have to have him play 1-1. Keith Smith is up and coming but when he is your #3 you're in trouble. Keep in mind that you can re-sign R.W. But I wouldn't advise that.
At S you have the Headhunter Kenoy Kennedy. So you are set at SS. But at FS Holt has just not made any big leaps. A back-up here is greatly needed. It would not be a bad idea to copy the idea that the real Lions did in the draft and take a S early in the draft. But if you are sold on Holt then don't bother getting a back-up to compete.
Also Hanson is getting older. Drafting a kicker and working with him would not be a bad idea. Another draft idea would be to take a project late in the draft. I will be looking at QB Bruce Gradkowski from Toledo. I believe he is the real deal.

.I will draft Vince Young at my quarterback position for my west coast offense at pick number 17 for my miami dolphins . Vince Young is perfect since west coast is all about timing and when that timing is disrupted I need someone who can scramble and throw on the run . Ican always work on his accuracy but you cannot teach speed . I will the look to keep brown since he is a good power back to smash it up the middle and he is a good receiver out of the backfield . I will look for a power fullback who can power it up the middle in Free Agency . I will keep Chris Chambers . And look 4 a receiver like Joe Jer. in FA . He is perfect 4 my system . In the TE position I will keep Randy McMichael who is a great west coast TE . I will adress my OL in year 2 . What do u think about my offense .

i will be da pats
first i will sign a new defensive cordinator then i will resign evrey body including adam vinateri. then i will sign ty law. then 2 the draft
1. i will draft a RB either william or maroney (will not get white he is a fullback not a running back) in case both rb's are gone by my pick ( not likely) i will get a shutdown cb like jimmy williams
2. i will trade up in the 2nd round somewhere in the 33-35 area. most likely chad jackson will be drafted earlier then he was in real life if he is still there i will get him. if chad isnt there i will get a saftey to start after rodney harrison retires. somebody like ko simposon, darnell bing, or donte whitner.
3. will have traded that pick to get 2nd round pick
4. i will draft a qb. because doug will most likely retire. some one like drew olsen, d.j. shockley, and if he is still ont the board omar jabocbs.
5. i will draft an offensive line man. some one big like fred matua.
6. in the 6th and 7th round i will get 2 good WR. maybe greg jennings or skyler green

Actually to try Vince in a WCO would be about the worse fit possible. The WCO is all about timing which you are correct on. But a QB in the WCO must have accuracy. Young is not proven to do this yet. There is a reason as to why Vick struggles and why they are now going to shy away from the WCO thre in ATL. Accuracy is 75% of the WCO. It is all based on 4-5 yard plays. Leinart would be your best fit for the WCO. VY would excel more in a vertical or a spread. The vertical will allow him to take off more freely. Where as in a WCO he will be trapped and taken down quickly on a scramble. The spread would allow for the most running but also for more gambles through the air. I highly advise to shy away from the WCO idea with VY.
